The National Rehabilitation Hospital is the National Centre for primary rehabilitation for adults and children, serving patients locally and from all over the country.  The hospital includes the National Spinal Injury, Prosthetic, and Brain Injury Rehabilitation services and a Children’s Department.  The hospital also provides treatment for a wide variety of other conditions.

The Hospital was established in 1961 in conjunction with the Department of Health and the Sisters of Mercy.  The only hospital of it’s kind in the country, it deals with referrals from all parts of the twenty six counties.  This is reflected in the fact that approximately 65% of all patients come from outside the Dublin area.  The Hospital has 119 beds and there are 370 whole time equivalent staff.  The approximate annual number of new patients seen is 430; re-admissions are 300 and average out-patient cases number 1,000 per year.

The National Rehabilitation Hospital has recently been awarded a 3 year accreditation by CARF International which ranks the hospital as one of the leading rehabilitation facilities internationally.  The National Rehabilitation Hospital is also currently undergoing rapid development and expansion of its rehabilitation services under the direction of Medical Consultants in Rehabilitation.

Aims:

The principal aim of the Hospital is to provide the highest standard rehabilitation service to patients with the resource allocation provided.  The Hospital also aims to provide wherever possible timely and effective use of resources to ensure an effective and patient-focussed service, so that each person can achieve the maximum potential possible through treatment for their illness/injury.  The Hospital commits to using the resources available to it in a manner which achieves equity, quality and accountability.

The hospital is dedicated to serving people with physical and/or cognitive disabilities and their families/carers.  Our aim is to help them achieve optimal independence and enhance the quality of their lives.  In keeping with the spirit of the Sisters of Mercy, who founded the Hospital, we endeavour to maintain the ethos on which the Hospital was established and to bring peace of mind to all our patients.

The National Rehabilitation Hospital espouses the values established by the Sisters of Mercy to provide high quality care and treatment to patients irrespective of background or status, but on the basis of need. The hospital, in partnership with the patients and families, endeavours to achieve health and social gain through the effective treatment and education of patients who, following illness or injury, require dedicated interdisciplinary rehabilitation services. The hospital aims to achieve this in a manner that is equitable and transparent in its service delivery, sensitive and responsive to those availing of its services, and supportive of the staff entrusted with its delivery.

Patient Information

The Rehabilitation Service of the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) treats patients from all over the country. Rehabilitation is our speciality and each service is under the direction of a Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine. Our services include a consulting service to Beaumont, the Mater and St. Vincent’s Hospitals, and primary rehabilitation in-patient care at the National Rehabilitation Hospital. Patients are normally referred to the consultant at NRH by another specialist or their GP. The urgency of admission is determined by the consultant at NRH and admission planned. Usually patients will have spent some time on the waiting list before admission. A patient's team consists of specialist consultants, ward staff and therapists.

Each patient’s progress is monitored regularly, with meetings being held to review progress and treatment. Both the patient and his or her family or carers are encouraged to attend and participate in meetings with the rehabilitation team. Where indicated, a meeting will also be arranged with the community care team from the patient's area to ensure that they are as fully briefed as possible about the patients’ on-going needs.

As the relationship between patient and staff can be expected to extend far beyond the stay in hospital, great emphasis is placed on building a good relationship with the patient and his or her family and carers. Periodic medical reviews are a normal part of our post hospital service. Should re-admission be necessary every effort will be made to facilitate this as promptly as possible.

The National Rehabilitation Hospital offers a range of specialist inpatient, outpatient and community rehabilitation services. These services are tailored to meet the individual needs of the adults and children we serve.  The Programmes include:

1. Brain Injury Inpatient Programme (BI/IP)

The Brain Injury Inpatient Rehabilitation Programme (BI/IP) at the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) provides specialised, individualised and goals focussed rehabilitation for people with acquired brain injury (ABI). The BI/IP at the NRH is the national inpatient rehabilitation service provider for people with ABI in the Republic of Ireland. It strives to demonstrate the commitment, capabilities and resources to maintain itself as a specialised rehabilitation programme in the care for people with ABI.

2. Paediatric Family-Centred Rehabilitation Programme

The Paediatric Family-Centred Rehabilitation Programme is the national medical service for children and adolescents requiring intensive rehabilitation as a result of traumatic and non-traumatic brain injury, stroke, traumatic and non-traumatic spinal cord injury, neurological disorders, limb absence, other musculoskeletal and neuromuscular disorders. Referrals are received from across the Republic of Ireland and the Paediatric Programme can serve up to eight children/adolescents at any one time (six inpatients and two day patients).

Healing, rehabilitation, and adjustment to disability may be both medical and emotional. As children/adolescents learn to master tasks and manage disabilities, they require support, praise and guidance. At the National Rehabilitation Hospital the interdisciplinary Paediatric Programme brings together staff with relevant experience and expertise in child/adolescent neurological rehabilitation. The team work together in partnership with the child/adolescent and their family/carers to help the individual young person become as independent and confident as possible to achieve their full rehabilitation potential.

3. Prosthetic, Orthotic & Limb Absence Rehabilitation Programme (POLAR)

The Prosthetic, Orthotic & Limb Absence Rehabilitation Programme (POLAR) is a specialised, interdisciplinary, coordinated and goal focussed rehabilitation programme for people with amputation or congenital limb absence.

4. Spinal Cord System Of Care Programme (SCSC)

Spinal cord injury may result from traumatic injury (usually as a result of an accident) or non-traumatic injury, for example, following cancer or tumours involving the spinal cord, or other disorders affecting the spinal cord. Depending on the nature of the spinal cord injury, people can present with resulting disabilities that may be physical, psychological, social or vocational (work-related).

The Spinal Cord System of Care at the National Rehabilitation Hospital provides the expertise necessary to help you achieve the best possible outcome from your rehabilitation. The team will set realistic and achievable goals with the patient and the family.

5. Comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitation Programme (CIRP)

The Comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitation Programme at the National Rehabilitation Hospital provides rehabilitation services for people with a range of conditions that significantly interfere with their ability to live as independently as possible.

Medical Care

The adult admitting Rehabilitation Medical Consultants are Dr. Delargy, Dr. Ryall, Dr. McNamara, Dr. Carroll and Dr. McElligott. The paediatric admitting Rehabilitation Medical Consultant is Dr. Monaghan. Medical care is provided by these specialists in Rehabilitation Medicine in co-operation with orthopaedic surgeons, an urologist, plastic surgeon, psychiatrist, neuropsychiatrist and radiologist.

Given the range of specialist rehabilitation expertise at the NRH, each of the medical departments at the National Rehabilitation Hospital has been involved in core service developments. The Spinal Unit at the Mater Hospital, the Neuro-Surgical Services at Beaumont Hospital and Cork University Hospital continue to be the dominant referral sources for patients with spinal cord injury and acquired brain injury. Nationally the NRH maintains its position as the specialist provider of rehabilitation for people who sustain complex neurological disability and amputation.
