Lex Consultancy - Breaking into Legal
Most Frequently Asked Questions asked on how to break into Legal:
- How much experience do I need?
- What courses can I do?
- How long will it take?
- What is the starting salary?
In today’s job market particularly legal, most vacancies advertised require a certain amount of specific experience, however this is not always the case...
To gain an entry level role in the legal sector you will ideally have completed a legal secretarial course or have 6-12 month’s secretarial experience.
Believe it or not, the two most influential factors to gain an entry role in the legal sector is not your experience or qualifications, but your personality and your typing speed.
If you are a confident, enthusiastic individual who is eager to learn with a ‘can do will do’ attitude, then you have a great chance of breaking into the legal industry.
60-80% of a legal secretary’s day is spent dictaphone typing, so it is essential that you have a good typing speed. If this is your first role in legal, 45wpm copy typing will suffice. With a legal secretarial course completed and 50wpm, the starting salary can range from 22,000-25,000.
If you are not sure what your typing speed is or if you feel that you could improve on your typing, then Lex Consultancy offers a service for candidates to practice in privacy in our offices. All you have to do is to call today and we will book you in on whatever day suits you best and you can practice from 15mins – 1 hour. You will be given a room on your own where you can relax and take your time.
It can be hard to predict how long it will take to break into the legal industry. It really depends on how often the positions arise. We always have vacancies but to get the right one for you (i.e. location, salary) it may take time. Persistence is the key!
